Jawline definition

Community canon

The visible contour from gonion to chin on the lateral profile. Forums treat jawline as the composite of three inputs: gonial angle, chin projection, and submental fat. A weak jawline signals one of those three failing. Strong jawlines anchor the rest of the face.

Clinical canon

There is no single clinical metric for jawline definition. It is a perceptual composite of cervicomental angle (105 to 120 degrees ideal), gonial sharpness, mandibular plane angle, and submental adiposity. Skin laxity from age also degrades the read.

How it's measured

Photograph the jaw from a slight downward angle and from straight lateral. A defined jawline shows a clean shadow line from earlobe to chin with no double break.

Perceptual effect

Dominant predictor of perceived masculinity in male faces. Sharp jawlines correlate with higher attractiveness ratings even when other features are average.

Improvement paths

Fat loss to below 15 percent body fat reveals the underlying skeleton. Kybella or submental liposuction removes resistant fat. Filler and implants reshape the angle and contour. Mastication training adds masseter volume.
