Chin projection
Community canon
Forums treat strong forward chin projection as one of the highest-leverage masculine traits. A projected chin reads as confidence and dominance on the lateral profile, while a recessed chin gets flagged as the single most damaging lower-face feature in PSL rating threads. Frontal projection is less prized than lateral.
Clinical canon
Clinicians measure projection against face type. Euryprosopic, mesoprosopic and leptoprosopic faces tolerate different chin positions. The facial profile angle (glabella to subnasale to pogonion) tends to be aesthetic between 8.7 and 11.4 degrees. Mild retrusion is common and not pathological.
- Ideal
- 8.7°–11.4° facial profile angle (variable by face type)
- Acceptable
- slight retrusion to slight projection
How it's measured
Side-profile photo. Drop a vertical line from the lower lip vermillion. The pogonion should sit slightly behind that line in females, near it or slightly forward in males.
Perceptual effect
A projected chin lengthens the perceived mandible, sharpens the gonial angle visually, and pushes the submental shadow down. Even small corrections shift age and gender reads.
Improvement paths
Chin filler and genioplasty are the highest-leverage interventions. Mewing and posture marginally improve appearance in soft tissue. Beard styling can mask mild retrusion. Bonesmashing does not work and is dangerous.
